River Baptism

River baptism is a rite celebrated by many churches, particularly in the South. These photographs document a rural community’s baptism ritual in the Tallapoosa River in Alabama. All of the congregants are from a nearby church. They gathered on the river banks for a full immersion baptism one Sunday morning in early June.
